The SIG Sauer P220 is a semi-automatic pistol. To be able to manufacture that many handguns, SIG acquired a controlling interest in J. Sauer & Sohn in. Not all German Sigs have the mag release in the heel. I have a P226 that I bought 20 years ago and I'm sure it's a German gun and it has what we consider a conventional mag release. My P225 is German made and that has a conventional mag release. German made Sigs will have the following proof marks. German manufactured SIG-Sauers typically come with three proof marks. The first is an ornamental crown with an N beneath it to indicate it was proofed with smokeless (nitrocellulose) powder. The second looks like a 'squished 8-legged 2-pincered bug'. This is the proof mark for the Kiel, Germany proofhouse. Lastly, the proof house adds a two letter code to indicate the year the gun was proofed. The table shows the letter to digit mapping. ![]() For example: a SIG-Sauer stamped KB was proofed in 1991. One stamped JJ was proofed in '88. A = 0 B = 1 C = 2 D = 3 E = 4 F = 5 G = 6 H = 7 J = 8 K = 9. If it was bought 20 years ago that is US made. I have SIG 220 I bought the same time and it is with conventional mag button. On my slide it has 2 marking on both sides. One states Made in W. Germany under the P220 sign. On the other side it states Sig-Arms Inc. If it has Sig-Arms Inc. All German pistols do not have Mag buttons for release. Perfect example are the Walther p-38s Wrong; SIGSAUER USA only started making pistols domestically with the introduction of the machined slided models (way less that 20 years ago). 20 years ago, they were just importing them. And SIGARMS had just moved to EXETER then. Sig-Arms is the IMPORTER, if they have serial numbers on the frame only, that indicates it's either made in America or assembled here. European standards for firearms requires that pistols made there have the serial numbers on slide, barrel AND frame. Where the magazine release is located just tells you when it was made, it's not an indication of place of origin. SigSAUER early on realized they'd sell more pistols here if they incoporated the American style magazine release. Another example is the P08 Luger, no heel release there. If your pistol says 'Made in W. Germany' how can you be confused as to it's country of origin? Good question. Because sometimes manufacturers make complete guns out of extra parts. Just because a stamped slide with 'Made in Germany' on it doesn't necessarily mean it was assembled and shipped from Germany. This is the case here Dave. Unfortunately, yours wasn't 'Made in W. The slide and frames were made in two different time periods. This is indicated by the newer SAS frames, which was post 2000. There are newer enhancements on your gun though. The melted SAS frame is beneficial for concealed carry. From what I remember, these recent P228s also have the newer take down lever. It's still a great gun, just not completely made, assembled and shipped as a whole from Germany. If your pistol says 'Made in W. Germany' how can you be confused as to it's country of origin? True, none of the W German marked Sigs were assembled or made here. I think XDr and Mtn are either pulling our legs, or they were given bad advice while shopping for SigSAUERS. Unix executable file. Most of SigSAUER's frames are still made in Germany, so they have made in Germany marked frames.
